Looking back at Cranbury, you realize it has a history as rich as America itself. One of the oldest towns in New Jersey, Cranbury is located between New York City and Philadelphia. In the 1700s, it took several days to travel between the two cities on rough roads and trails. Being settled in between the two, Cranbury proved to be a convenient place to rest people and horses. In 1804, Aaron Burr took a breather in Cranbury while fleeing after his legendary duel with Alexander Hamilton.

It is believed that there were residents in Cranbury as early as 1860; there is a deed of sale dated March 1, 1698 for land between Josiah Prickett and John Harrison that indicates buildings and settlement earlier than that. In 1997, Cranbury celebrated its 300th birthday.

Cranbury has lived a charmed life for sure. It has been recognized by the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1979, and on the National Register of Historic Places the following year. Cranbury is one town that remembers and embraces its roots.

In 1788, Cranbury made American history when General George Washington and his staff set up a headquarters of sorts in a on South Main Street. Washington arrived in the morning of June 26 from Kingston. He and his staff made plans concerning the Battle of Monmouth and marched out again that evening. At the time, both Colonel Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette resided.

Cranbury also has a deep agricultural history that is intertwined with the historical district. The village was built to support the local farm community. Cranbury is a member of the New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program and has over 2,000 acres in permanently preserved farmland.

Today, Cranbury stands in its historical splendor as an effective representation of American history and the memory of the building of this great nation that modern advancements are apt to forget.

Nestled in the heart of New Jersey, the historic 250 year old Cranbury Inn Restaurant is a landmark not to be missed by visitors. Designated with a Tourism diamond award in 2007, the Cranbury Inn has been credited with contributing significantly to the tourism industry in New Jersey. A look into the history of the Inn reveals why. The oldest part of the tavern dates back to the mid 1700s, with new additions added in the late 1700s and the main dining room constructed in the 1930s. The Inn has been alleged to have been a part of the Underground Railroad, and an even more distant history places the troops of General Washington to have meet just a few doors down from the Inn. Authentic colonial decor and beautiful historic paintings welcome you in this warm, beautiful restaurant. Visit the Historic Cranbury Inn Restaurant for lunch or dinner 7 days a week, or for a champagne brunch on Sunday mornings. Try the Cranbury Inn crabcakes or the Filet Mignon to sample some of the best of what the Inn has to offer. The location also hosts special events, banquets, and weddings; arrangements can be made by contacting the restaurant at 609-655-5595.

Cranbury School is the only public school in the Cranbury Township district in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The only other schools in Cranbury are private preschools. Cranbury School is a small suburban school; its 55 teachers instruct students from pre-K through grade 8. High school students become part of the Princeton school system.

The Cranbury community is an upscale area, as is borne out by the fact that less than 1% of the students qualify for a federal reduced-cost lunch program. According to the most recent data from the National Center for Educational statistics, Cranbury’s taxpayers spent $17,402 per pupil for the 2007-2008 school year. This compares with a statewide average of $15,798.

When the all-volunteer Cranbury Township School Board recently approved the General Operating Funds for the 2010-2011 school year, it totaled $16,744,466, including a million for a new roof. If the minutes from past board meetings indicate current issues that a school faces, then the Cranbury school district concerns itself with mundane operational issues and recognitions of student achievement in chess matches, Leadership Day at the state capitol, math competitions and book swaps. The school has community support and an active PTO that is involved with student activities.

This approach is delivering results when measured by test scores. Students in grades 3 through 8 are given the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) in language arts literacy and math. Science is added beginning in grade 4. The NJ ASK is a standards-based test that tests specific skills defined by the state of New Jersey. All subjects in all grades were significantly above the state average for 2009, continuing a consistent history of exceeding state averages. Literacy scores were higher across the board than any other elementary schools within a five-mile radius with the lone exception of third grade scores at Wicoff elementary in nearby Plainsboro, NJ.

The school has four computer labs. Instrumental and vocal music programs are available beginning in grade 4. The school offers its students extra-curricular activities in sports, publication of a school newspaper, and drama productions.
